John Martyn was a sublime genius, and an innovative musical talent who sadly died at 60. John Martyn produced a canon of music that is both breathtakingly bold and achingly tender in its complex, atmospheric beauty. John Martyn's music influenced a generation of his peers, friends and fans alike. His contribution continues to resonate many years after his passing. He has picked up endless acclaim worldwide from those fortunate enough to be seduced by his unique voice and instrumental mastery; and his music will live forever in the annals of popular music history.
Sarah Jane Morris, through her own brilliant interpretive vocal talents, has picked up this torch to shine a light on this great musical maverick, illuminating his life's work, in her inspirational new show Sweet Little Mystery. She is collaborating with activist/journalist/comedian/writer/director Mark Thomas and filmmaker Rod Morris.
Sarah Jane will be accompanied by her regular collaborators, Tony Remy, Tim Cansfield, Martyn Barker and Henry Thomas, and special guests for some venues.
Tony Remy (guitar) is one of the world's most exciting guitar players. His virtuosity is enriched with jazz intuition and bluesy soul. Live on stage, Tony’s relentless invention and incredible raw energy can set any audience on fire. Over the years Tony has gained a legendary following amongst the jazz community worldwide. He has toured and recorded with musicians including: Courtney Pine, Jason Rebello, Julian Joseph, Freddy Hubbard, Jean Toussaint, Steve Williamson, Lonny Liston Smith, Lenny Whit, Omar, Steps Ahead, Gary Barlow, Simply Red, US3, Cleveland Watkiss, Pee Wee Ellis, Ronny Laws, Nelson Rangell, Connor Reeves, Maysa Leak, Down to the Bone, Matt Bianco, Karen Ramirez, Noel McKoy, Annie Lennox, Craig David, Icognito, M-People.
Tim Cansfield (guitar) is a self-taught musician born in Trinidad. This enigmatic and self-effacing genius is the first choice of many recording artists, including the Bee Gees, Steve Winwood, Elton John, Heaven 17, Billy Preston, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Seal, Swing Out Sister, Barry Gibb, and Kevin Rowland.
Martyn Barker (drums/percussion) is an English drummer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, best known as the drummer for Shriekback. He has also been a member of King Swamp, and worked with Robert Plant, Marianne Faithfull, Billy Bragg, Beth Gibbons, Rustin Man, Alain Bashung and Juldeh Camara & Justin Adams. He has co-written and co-produced two records with songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Talitha Rise, as well as producing and drumming for acts worldwide. Martyn has co written and recorded many albums with Sarah Jane and co-produced Love and Pain in 2003.
Henry Thomas (bass) - The list of bands and artists Henry Thomas has played with is like a Who’s Who of popular music in the UK and the US. Here is a selection: Randy Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, Paul Weller, Omar, Leon Ware, Labi Siffre, Jim Capaldi, Errol Brown, Billy Ocean, Van Morrison, Justin Hayward, Bros, Keni Burke, Heatwave, Hot Chocolate, Ginger Baker, and The Crusaders. Henry has also worked with many jazz artists including Alan Holdsworth, John Etheridge, Jim Mullen, Tim Whitehead, Barbara Thompson, and Didier Lockwood. Henry has been performing and recording with Sarah jane since 1997.
